Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. Services on this night include the imposition of ashes on one's forehead. This is a reminder of the sacrifice that Christ made. Palm branches from the Palm Sunday of the previous year are dried and then burned to create the ashes.
Not every Christian denomination participates in the Ash Wednesday observation. Those who do are almost always moved.
