How travel bloggers can donate to charity

Lots of people will be traveling during the last quarter of the year. Travel bloggers like myself will be planning  holiday vacations, seeing family members. Next up on the list is to pull tax information together for next year. Road trips pack on the miles. A car donation to charities can provide the tax break that travel writers can benefit from.

The amount of the deduction varies with the age of the car, the number of miles that are on it and several other factors. Check with a tax pro before donating and look at IRS Publication 561 online about determining the value of donated property.

Other ways that travel writers can donate to charity are:

Donate Delta Sky Miles
In addition to a car donation to charities, some travel bloggers may have Delta Sky Miles to give. Nonprofit charities like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make A Wish Foundation and other agencies can use the airline miles to help others.

Loyalty points
My membership to Choice Privileges does more than help me rack up points for free stays. The points can be redeemed for gift cards to gas stations, restaurants, music downloads or entertainment. Charities can use these for incentives, to further their missions or as auction prizes.

Perks for restaurant reviews or tickets
Sometimes I have been offered a book or other item to review for the blog. Although it does not impact the review, these items are sometimes enjoyed by charities. Like with loyalty points or a car donation, charities can use these for raffles, prizes or to sell at an auction.

My passions are travel blogging and supporting nonprofits. Just to be clear, my PT Cruiser is not going to be rehomed. It has been such a steady friend on getaways that the vehicle has almost become a sort of trademark. This list of other ways that travel blogging can help others is one that I am putting to good use.

Although a car donation to charities is not in the cards, I am still glad to support nonprofits through other forms of giving. If you have a travelogue or are a travel writer, I hope that you will consider ways that you can help charities this Christmas.

  2. Writing about a particular charity as we travel can give a nonprofit a wider audience. There is a lot that travel bloggers can do to help charities.
