Belk to offer free mammograms in the greater Knoxville area

Here's a Knoxville event that every woman should consider attending. Belk will offer free mammograms in Knoxville beginning Tuesday, April 30 - May 11, 2013. The events will be held at the West Town Mall and at the Turkey Creek Location as well as other Belk locations in the greater Knoxville area.

The free mammograms are provided by BelkGives Go Mobile Mammography Center. Described as a "screening center on wheels"
the mobile center will provide a potentially lifesaving screening free of charge. Women should be over age 40, without previous breast concerns and have a primary care doctor. Results are going to be read by a licensed radiologist and the report sent to the primary care and to the woman having the test done.

Appointments should be made by calling 855-655-BMMC (2662). Additional information can be found on http://www.knoxville.org/event/4419/belk-offers-free-mammograms-in-knoxville/

It isn't every day that an event like this comes to our area. I hope that women will take advantage of the screenings. Many of my readers are aware that my mother died of breast cancer at the age of 54. She fought if valiantly for just over five years.

Living without health insurance was tough. She began a catch-up approach to healthcare after receiving a job that offered health insurance. In some ways, the care was a little late. Who knows how different the outcome might have been if she had been able to have earlier screenings?

As the daughter of someone who has been stricken with the disease, I urge all women to share this information with a woman that you care about. It only takes a few minutes to make an appointment and it's free. I cannot think of any other series of events in Knoxville that offers so much at no cost.

There is little doubt that the BelkGives Go Mobile Mammography Center is a powerful tool in the fight against breast cancer for all women. Like all tools, it has to be used to be effective.
