Restaurant Review Edelweiss Restaurant Staunton, VA

If you like good German food and great service this is it! At least, I think it is. Probably. I'm embarrassed to admit that this visit was my first to a German restaurant. Even though it was the first, it certainly won't be the last.

In November 2009, I dined at the Edelweiss German Restaurant in Staunton, VA with 3 teenage girls. None of them had ever been to a German restaurant either. We were on a trip to remember and up for adventure. Except for one holdout, everyone was ready to try it. For her, I promised that if she didn't like the food and left hungry, we would go through the nearby McDonald's drive-thru. Thankfully, I didn't have to fulfill the promise.

There were a few concessions to folks who might be too timid to try German cuisine but the menu consists almost entirely German food. If you aren't sure what to order, then ask your server. As you might imagine, we had many questions for our server. She was patient, made excellent suggestions and explained the menu.

In the end, one teen and I decided to share the Combination Plate at the Edelweiss German Restaurant. The $20.95 price seemed a little steep but become more reasonable when shared.

The meal had goulash, sauerbraten and 3 other meats. The sides of sauerkraut, red cabbage and potatoes were all served family style. Along with it were mouthwatering Edelweiss Restaurant homemade rolls. These would have been worth the trip all by themselves.

In all, the meal for the two of us came to just under $30 plus tip. I've paid more for lunches at American style restaurants and would have traded any of them in for lunch at Edelweiss.

We almost felt as though we had stepped into a small part of Germany. Adding authenticity is a large collection of nutcrackers. Beer aficionados will be happy at Edelweiss in Staunton, Virginia. Not only was the food good but the decor was fun. There was a wide selection of German beer and they had a collection of interesting steins.

Don't feel that you have to take my word alone. Trip Advisor has several reviews of the restaurant that may be informative. You may also want to visit Yelp.Com for more insights.

I was able to speak with the owner of Edelweiss in Staunton, Virginia. His slight accent assured me that the German food is authentic. We chatted about the impending hurricane and his trip to Tennessee. His friendliness added to our visit. Our experience was positive. It will be a must-stop on our next trip through Staunton.

Edelweiss is 2.5 hours from D.C. To get there take I-81, exit 213 and follow the signs at the bottom of the off ramp.

The restaurant is open from 7:00 am - 9:00 pm Tuesday through Saturday. They close at 8:00 pm on Sunday and all day on Monday. The phone number is (540) 337-1203.

  1. Interesting post. I have passed that Greenville exit many times but never tried the restaurant.
