Pancake breakfast fundraiser update for mission team

Here is the pancake breakfast fundraiser update that you have all been waiting on. This series is a departure from the normal articles that appear on You've Been Reviewed. Given the local interest it seemed best to post updates here. This way everyone can stay abreast of the developments. After all, it isn't every day that a team from the churches in our area get to share God and learn about Him in turn, in Alaska.

The pancake breakfast fundraiser at Wesleyanna UMC was a success. Lots of new faces joined the team in the fundraising efforts. Tickets were priced at $5.00 which included all-you-can-eat pancakes, plus sausage, scrambled eggs and drinks.

Profit from the fundraiser was around $875. People were generous enough to donate items, or to provide funding, so that the cost of raw ingredients were covered. Sausage, pancake mix and syrup were donated by individuals that wanted to help. Several others gave the funds to provide other essentials. The end result was a pancake breakfast fundraiser that gave a 100% profit margin and people tossed in a few extra dollars here and there.

Also, everyone seemed to have a good time. That's important when you're trying to raise money for any cause.

Other fundraisers are coming up. There is a murder mystery dinner at Jones Chapel UMC on April 25, the team will be hosting a jewelry party where 80% of the jewelry price will go to the mission team. A photographer will be taking family portraits in time for Mother's Day. A yard and/or craft sale is also being discussed.

The Claxton Community Fire Department in Riceville, Tennessee is an all volunteer organization. They do receive a modest amount of grant funding but most of the support comes from community members. To help, the members of Piney Grove United Methodist Church in Athens, Tennessee is sponsoring a fundraiser on Saturday, December 14, 2013.

The fire department is pulling out all the stops. Kids can have their photos made with Santa on the fire truck. Photos will be made from 3:00 - 4:30 pm. 

A Christmas carol sing-a-long begins at 4:00 pm inside the church sanctuary. Come gather round the piano as we sing your holiday favorites. 

Step over to the fellowship hall when you get thirsty. Refreshments will include cookies and apple cider.

Benefit 5K race and 1 Mile fun walk in Athens

There will be a benefit 5K race and one mile fun walk in Athens, Tennessee. Mark your calendars for March 23, 2013. There is an early bird registration fee of $20. After that the registration goes up to $25. The money will go to help a young woman with her medical costs. Even if you register early, you may still want to include the extra $5.

The benefit 5K race and one-mile fun walk is a way for the community to give back.  There will be prizes for individuals and for teams who register. Plus, anyone who donates $25 or more gets a free t-shirt. The real reason to participate is to help someone who needs it.

BenchMark Physical Therapy is helping one of their own by putting the benefit 5K race/ one mile fun walk together. This is the second time that they have helped me overcome a health challenge. I know them and trust them. When they told me about the 5K race and one mile benefit, I felt compelled to blog about it.

A young woman on the BenchMark team is facing an extreme health crisis. I don't want to give out her personal information but I can tell you that she joined the team  in 2011. Since then, she worked her way into the hearts of the community and is highly regarded among her co-workers.

Home decision details

I am finding out that when you put a home in order, that the small details can be the most important. There are a lot of decisions that have to be made. Choosing the right colors, deciding how to arrange the furniture (and rearrange it) take time. Figuring out if you want to buy carpeting from a company like Behnam Rugs or from another company are the types of decisions that turn a house into a home.

Thanks to my husband's job, we have traveled to different parts of East Tennessee. This parsonage is the first that where the committee allows us to help make decisions. We have had a great deal of fun over the past year. I do not know if we will get involved with decisions on things like French patio doors or atriumwindows but they are nice to think about.

A few years ago, I traveled to Texas with volunteers from Hope for Healing.Org. We considered developing an office out there and were amazed at the amount of details. Just deciding which commercial cleaning company to use had us overwhelmed. I am grateful for that travel experience and for the opportunity to be there with our volunteers.

My new job as a local pastor has me feeling sentimental and appreciative. Riceville is a good area to work and to live. I hope that some of you will consider traveling here to get a taste of simple country living. Once you arrive, you won't want to leave.

Relay for Life Event in Athens, Tennessee

The Relay for Life event in Athens, Tennessee is tonight at the Pavilion at the Athens Regional Park. The clear and cloudless sky makes it a perfect night for this fundraiser. The purpose of Relay for Life is to raise funds that will help in the fight against cancer.

Participants who are planning to be at the event may want to bring a jacket. Evening temperatures in Athens are expected to become chilly in the late night hours.
Relay for Life also raises awareness about the disease. Cancer strikes without warning. Although some people may have a genetic tendency, most of the people who have cancer do not have a family history.

My own mother was a case in point. She found a breast cancer lump in 1989. Health insurance and dread were issues that kept her from seeking treatment. Her doctor thought that the lump might be a common cyst that  was nothing to worry about. The resulting delay necessitated a radical mastectomy. Five years too late the doctors discovered that the cancer had spread.

Part of the Relay for Life fundraiser in Athens,  TN is a walk by survivors. There is also a caregiver's lap for anyone who has taken care of a cancer patient. Tonight will also feature survivor Mayor Hal Buttram, an invocation, Boy Scout color guards and music. Most of all, it features the all important relay.

The event at Athens Regional Park begins at 5:00 pm and goes until 5:00 am. Concessions are available.  I hope that you will support  the fundraiser. Information and donations are accepted online at Relay for Life.

Knoxville Walk and Wag Dog Walk raises funds for memorial scholarship

If your family is looking for a June outing, I have the one for you. The Knoxville Walk and Wag Dog Walk charity fundraiser takes place on June 2 and it is not just any event. This one is being done to honor the memory of a little girl who died as the result of a tragic horseback riding accident.

This why you want to support this Knoxville event:

Sometimes bad things happen that are no one's fault. The death of 10 year old Abby Gibson fits into that category. She was familiar with the horse, wore a riding helmet and was under the supervision of a caring instructor.

When the horse stumbled they both went down. Abby was lifeflighted to UTMedical Center where doctors did everything they could. In the end, it was a tragedy that no one could predict or prevent.

Abby's mom could have become bitter in her grief but did not. Instead, Jennifer Gibson decided to create a the Abby Gibson Memorial Scholarship Fund at the UT Vet school in Knoxville. This will give graduates from an East Tennessee High School the chance to become the veterinarian that Abby wanted to be.

Another reason to support this charity fundraiser is that the monies for the scholarship will be invested by the university. First, Jennifer Gibson has to raise $25,000 to get the fund going. At $16,000 she is already more than halfway to the amount that she needs and is counting on a charity fundraiser to meet her goal.

This is where you and the Knoxville Walk and Wag can come together. PetSafe is the presenting sponsor. The day is just about guaranteed to be fun for the entire family and it couldn't be for a better cause.

Knoxville Walk and Wag will be held at Victor Ashe Park on Saturday, June 2. Registration for the dgo walk begins at 9 am. the dog walk is at 10 am and other festivities begin at 11 am. How Walden.edu might fit my travel writing schedule

Traveling isn't only one of my passions it is also how I supplement my income. Writing travel reviews here on Youve Been Reviewed and for online writing sites helps me pay bills and provides some freedom.

Update: 10/6/18 This article was written several months ago when I was first deciding where to attend college. Instead of attending an online school, I opted for my local community college. The offline courses have kept me at home more, but the tuition is free and that's a major factor. Because a couple of people said they benefitted from the article, it makes sense to leave it up. However, I wanted to return with an update in the interest of full disclosure.

Travel writing takes me on the road quite a bit. My Disney World articles outlines my experience at the theme park. You can find a lot of information on this blog about how we did Disney without the kids. My insights will hopefully help you make your next trip a magical adventure. You can also read about my drive through the Canadian wildnerness to Alaska and about journeys closer to home. But what does this mean for my college education?

I enjoy being a travel writer, but I also have plans to go back to school. How will I fit everyting in? That's where an online school like Walden University might be beneficial. An online school will allow me to work on the road while completing my degree at the same time. I'm also looking into classes at Pellissippi State. This is a local community college that offers an expanding array of online courses.   

Schedule flexibility is important. Needing to have someone with me means working around Hubby's schedule and the schedule of my kids. That's why, if I ever want to go back to school someplace like WaldenU.edu is going to be at the top of my list.

I've been surprised at how often internet is available on my travels. On our drive to Alaska I couldn't help but notice that internet access was easier to find than a cell phone signal. My Mi-Fi is nice to have but WI-FI is also available in many campgrounds.

That's what makes Walden University's online degree programs a possibility. They not only have flexibility but they offer classes that sound interesting. The combination is one that is worth considering. Learning different languages would certainly be a plus for me! You can click here if you would like to learn about Walden.

I'm not sure about going back to school. I have discussed this with my family so it is on my radar screen. Right now I like being able to bring travel stories to you from my pop-up camper, home office and on the road. Who knows what the future holds?

I'll never forget it when my grandmother bought new carpet. She wanted some for years but didn't feel that she could afford it. Then things changed and Grandmother was able to get new carpet. It made her home look better and gave her more confidence about having people over.

I was on http://www.TexasElectricityProviders.com/ the other day researching better power rates and paying bills when I heard all sorts of ruckus in the front yard. I go out only to find that our two dogs, Knox and Kaylee, are covered in mud, literally from head to toe. Now, I know you know the look I’m talking about, but it baffles me every time I see it. Somehow a dog can go from a furry little rascal to a precious human personality in minutes when they do something wrong. They both looked at me with these wide eyes and half-tucked, half-wagging tails, saying, “What? We were just playing. Sorry, mom”. Of course, I’m half trying not to laugh half trying not to cry. I don’t even know where to begin to clean them off. I go inside for towels and have a brilliant idea. Leave them. Now, I know this is a mean-wife move, but I knew Jerry was coming home within the hour, right as I had to leave for yoga. So, I did it. I took off and left those muddy babies in the yard. And came home to two clean pups. My husband is a saint.

It's amazing what you can do with a prefab building these days

My husband received another flier today about metal prefab buildings. It wasn't that long ago that these structures were used exclusively as aircraft shelters. Now you see them almost everywhere these days. I think about this every time I walk into a Sam's Wholesale Club or into a Wal-Mart.

They are sturdy and inexpensive if utilitarian. The buildings can be used to fit almost any need. Other big box retailers use them. They are also popular with schools and churches.

When we lived in North Carolina I had the privilege of speaking in a church. Every church says that they want to reach out to the youth of a community and grow. This church took the prefab building and outreach possibilities to the next level and beyond.

The entire prefab building had been planned from the ground up. A church committee had planned what they wanted the building to become before it had ever been ordered from the manufacturer.

Because the church wanted to use the prefab building as a disaster shelter the building had to conform to a set of specifications. I don't know what the specifications were but I can't see that they forgot any of the details.

About three fourths of the walls in the building were lined in carpet and padding. It turned out that this was to allow the kids to roller skate in the building. A DJ booth on the side wall kept CDs spinning and there was a large stage and altar area in the front.

Even better is the fact that the building served its purpose. When a hurricane came in the church became a disaster shelter. When Friday and Saturday nights roll around the kids use it as a local hangout. It's amazing what you can do with a prefab building these days.
