The attack happened on February 15, 1865. Union soldiers were able to surprise the Confederate soldiers who were camped here.
One hundred acres were dedicated as a memorial. Much of the planning and implementation was done by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the National Forest Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Hand chiseled stones tell the fate of Confederate soldier Tom Haney who was killed during the attack.
