Cherokee Mountain Confederate campsite

If you visit Chilhowee Mountain in the Cherokee National Forest you can't miss the sign for the Confederate Camp. It takes only a few minutes to view the marker and pavilion or you can hike along a trail for a longer stay.

The attack happened on February 15, 1865. Union soldiers were able to surprise the Confederate soldiers who were camped here.

One hundred acres were dedicated as a memorial. Much of the planning and implementation was done by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the National Forest Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Hand chiseled stones tell the fate of Confederate soldier Tom Haney who was killed during the attack.

Sherpaguides has other directions and information about Chilhowee Mountain. They include information on the ranger district of the Cherokee National Forest and history of Polk County. A scenic overlook, recreation area and campground are all nearby the Confederate Camp Historic Site on Chilhowee Mountain.
