Hungry Horse Dam: Highest in Montana

Hungry Horse Dam is the highest in Montana. My husband and I, along with several members of the mission team, stopped there today. It is a massive 564 feet tall! Hungry Horse Dam is on the Flathead River and is about 15 miles south of Glacier National Park.

There are a few places that you can pull off of the road as you approach the dam. A stunning view awaits you at the visitor center. We arrived after the 5:30 pm. closing time. The parking lot isn't large but there seems to be some roadside space.

Hungry Horse Dam has sidewalks along the roadway on the top of the dam. I suggest taking advantage of them (unless you are afraid of heights). The sidewalks provide the best views of the dam.

The visitor center is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, seven days a week. We arrived after the visitor center closed for the day. Visitors need to know that the bathrooms at Hungry Horse Dam are locked when the center closes.

Hungry Horse Dam is about four miles off of Highway 2. The road is paved and scenic. Our crew stopped a few times on the way to the dam. Even with the visitor center being closed, we stayed over an hour. Hopefully, the visitor center will be open when we go back next. Hungry Horse Dam is worth the second visit.
