Things to do Thanksgiving weekend in Knoxville, Tennessee

Looking for something to do other than a movie theater? There are plenty of things to do on Thanksgiving weekend in Knoxville that don't involve crowded movie concessions. We have family coming in for the holidays that we want to keep entertained. Now my problem is how to work in everything that we want to do.

Here is a sample itinerary for things to do on Thanksgiving weekend in Knoxville. I've previously written about restaurants that are open. This article focuses on activities and there are plenty of them.

Friday:
Black Friday shopping!! Turkey Creek, Knoxville Center, West Town Mall - where to choose first!
It's breakfast on the go this morning. Cereal bars and breakfast on the run. We've got to shop!

Lunch (or late breakfast) at an area Shoney's may be the way to go. The hot buffet is ready when we are.

McClung Museum
Open 9-5 Monday - Saturday and 1:00 - 5:00 on Sunday. The free museum is on UT Campus. It's quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of holiday activities. This is one of the things to do in Knoxville that is both interesting and lets you recharge. It's free, parking is free and exhibits are always interesting.

Friday night, November 27 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
Free
Go to Krutch Park in downtown Knoxville for one of my favorite things to do Thanksgiving weekend. The Christmas tree is lighted at 6:00 pm. There are carolers, face painting, music, a Little Elves Workshop, marshmallow roasting - and a lot of activities that I've forgotten about. Downtown parking is free after 6:00 pm and on weekends. See why I like it so much?

Saturday:
The day starts with a good breakfast - No restaurant speaks the Southern language of biscuits, grits and gravy like the Cracker Barrel. It's a fun place to grab a good meal and the gift shop, well that speaks for itself.

The show/exhibit runs from October 30 - November 30. Good holiday fun.

Wednesday - Sunday
Admission fee
Fundraising has never been more enchanting. This East Tennessee Children's Hospital fundraiser goes through Thanksgiving weekend. It is a fantasyland of Christmas trees, gingerbread houses, and activities for kids. The 2015 theme is Fantasy at a Glance. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and can be purchased online.

Saturday is a good day to tour Gay Street and Market Square Mall. There are great shopping opportunities through the shops. Mast General Store is right on Gay Street and has lots of holiday goods, candy for stockings and replica toys from past days.

Fee to skate, not to watch.
Knoxville's Holidays on Ice is just fun. Tickets can also be purchased online or at the door. I'm not a skater, but I enjoy watching the skaters from the sidelines.

Sunday
A fast food breakfast and morning worship service begins the day.

Lunch
Puleo's or another great Knoxville restaurant.

Afternoon concert at either:
Keyboards at Christmas
One Wurlitzer, 5 Steinway pianos and nine musicians make this a splendid way to spend the afternoon. Tickets are available online.

Classical Christmas by the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra is one of the things to do in Knoxville that raises funds for the less fortunate. Tickets are available online. Proceeds will go to provide toys and otherwise help impoverished residents of rural Appalachia.

Dinner
A good-bye dinner at the Braziero's Churriascaria might be a way to cap off the weekend. The Brazlian steakhouse has a calm quiet atmosphere, excellent service and good food. This place should be on every list of things to do in Knoxville, Thanksgiving weekend or otherwise.
