It’s time to get out the white shorts and white bag – it’s almost Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend is the official start of summer.  If you follow the old ‘rule’ it is also when you can start wearing your white shoes and carrying that white bag. Not many people follow that any longer…white is worn all year long.  But with that said, Memorial Day is sneaking up on us and it’s time you get prepared.

Although our BBQ grill is used almost daily throughout the year, for some people Memorial Day is about the only day they use theirs.  So if you are one of those people please be sure to check and make sure your grill is safe to use.  Clean it, get it spruced up and get ready to cook!

Whether you use propane, natural gas or charcoal - light ‘em up and get cooking.  It seems that the most popular food for a Memorial Day cookout is still hamburgers and hot dog.  But there are so many options don’t limit yourself…spread your wings and cook something different to celebrate the weekend.  You can even cook a pizza on the grill.

What about grilled pineapple?  Slice a fresh pineapple, grill it until you get nice grill marks, place in a bowl and add a scoop of vanilla ice cream, yum.  Or use peaches, or mango…think about it.

Safety first when it comes to grilling.  You as an adult know the grill is hot, but little kids don’t.  Keep an eye on the little ones while the grill is on, you don’t want a trip to the ER!  If you use charcoal, be careful not to dispose of those hot coals…wait until they cool completely.  The fire department will be busy at parades and events and might not make it to you house in time if you start a fire.

This is also the time when backyard swimming pools are open and it’s another avenue that needs safety tips.  Some places require a fence around a pool, while other areas require a safety alarm.  Be aware of the requirements in your neck of the woods and be sure to keep an eye, a close eye, on kids when they are in your yard.  I am a firm believer that all kids should take swimming lessons, even if you don’t have a pool.

So stay safe and enjoy the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend!
