The Nikon P100 is one camera I fully expected to like. I don’t like the thoughts of dragging a bunch of lenses around with me everywhere. A superzoom is appealing because it’s mid-range between a point and shoot and a DSLR.
A lot of people view their photos only on the computer. That’s fine. I’m just not one of them. I wanted a camera that would take both computer photos and excellent print as well. I hoped that this superzoom would perform as expected.
Possibly no company tops Nikon in quality. Their reputation is well deserved. My husband shoots with a D-90 and won’t consider using anything else (except possibly an upgrade). Our daughter enjoys her D-80 tremendously.
Therefore, it came as a surprise to all of us when I put the Nikon Coolpix P100 10 MP Digital Camera
back on the shelf. The camera has some really good attributes. It just wasn’t right for me. What drew me initially was the company’s good reputation combined with a 26X optical superzoom.
A cool feature is the way the view screen can tilt. Being able to take videos with stereo sound is good too. It fit my hand well. Despite its weight the Nikon P100 was fairly comfortable. I did feel that after awhile the weight could be a problem though.
Staff at the photo shop allowed me to use Nikon P100 in the store. I was able print the shots while there. I used the camera with and without zoom. To maximize stability I braced it on a tripod and a store display.
With a superzoom of this size using a tripod is a must. The lens picks up every move you make.
Scanned photos are included with this article. The car is taken at about half zoom. The sign is taken at full zoom. What I found was that the shots taken with the Nikon Coolpix P100 showed minimal softness when viewed on the screen. When printed as a 4x6 the softness became more pronounced. It was evident at half zoom and more apparent at full zoom.
Sadly, the Nikon P100 did not meet my needs. Print quality was the deal breaker. If I was looking for a good camera that would produce pictures to email Grandma this might be perfect. Hopefully, Nikon will come out with a better superzoom soon. I hope so anyway.
