The Wing Ding 33 conference is coming to Knoxville this weekend. We're not talking about hot wings here. We're talking about Gold Wings as in Honda. This eclectic group of riders is comprised of people with a wide range of backgrounds and interests.
It's not a Sturgis type of rally but one that's got Knoxville style. This means that it's an event you can take your kids to without having to do a lot of explaining afterward. It's fun and its back for its 4th time but it's the first time in over 2 decades.
For a few days riders will take over hotels and motels and spend time in Knoxville restaurants. Many participants are making this event a full vacation.
According to WBIR over 14,000 riders have descended upon Knoxville for the conference. Hotel signs and other business marquees all over the city welcome riders. Their spending is a big boost to the local economy but the welcome isn't just about money. Some business owners just like to see the bikes.
Honda Gold Wings are bigger than most bikes. Some are about the size of a small car. These are often built for two people and some can even pull small trailers. It's not unusual to hear a couple talking about going camping or taking a cross country road trip on the back of one of these bikes. Talking with bike owners is a large part of the fun of having this conference come to town.
