Cookie Recipes aren’t just for the holidays

If you think cookie recipes are only for the holiday season this article may change your mind.  Cookie Recipes can be used extensively for gifts and for potluck dinners. These mouth watering delicacies can be used anytime you want to say “I care”.

One of the best things about cooking food is the togetherness that it can bring. Baking can be the perfect after school or rainy day activity for parents of school age children. Kids love to mix and stir. Everyone loves the smell of fresh baked cookies right out of the oven.

My daughters and I have many happy memories of what we call bake-a-thons. Usually we do these for bake sales for causes we support. An entire day (or at least afternoon) is set aside. The three of us will peruse cookie recipes for days in advance.

On the appointed day we’ll bake, talk, laugh, laugh and just enjoy the company of one another. My husband is largely banished from the kitchen but is allowed to help by being the designated taste tester. Our kitchen becomes a haven for whispered secrets, stories of funny college happenings and the latest updates on friends and other family members.

For gifts, place cookies in a sandwich or snack sized plastic zip bag. Put several of these small packages into a gallon sized freezer bag. When you need a small gift take out one of the bags, repack into a clear cello bag and tie it about 2” from the top. Use a bright colored piece of ribbon or string. Add a handcrafted gift tag and you have the perfect way to perk up a friend’s day.

Here's our favorite easy sugar cookie recipe. I previously published it on Associated Content along with a few other cookie recipes.

1 tablespoon milk
1 egg
1 cup white granulated sugar
1 cup of softened butter
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (may use French Vanilla for a richer flavor)

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

In one bowl, mix the butter and sugar together then add in the egg, milk and vanilla. Over a second bowl, sift to combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Slowly add the ingredients of the first bowl to the second bowl.

Drop teaspoons of cookie dough onto baking sheets. Bake for 6-8 minutes until the cookies are a light golden brown.

Remove from oven and place on a cookie rack or clean towel to cool.
