Lanterns and Carriage Tours return to Old Gray Cemetery 2010

The Knoxville Old Gray Cemetery comes alive for the annual Lantern and Carriage tours. The event takes place on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. Parking is free.

Reenactors will be on hand to help visitors experience life in the Civil War era. Look for them to tell tall tales of some of the residents of the cemetery. The personalities reenacted will include ministers, southern belles and (of course) soldiers from the Civil War.

The Old Gray Cemetery is 160 years old and is among the oldest cemeteries in Knoxville. It was named after the English poet, Thomas Gray. It is adjacent to the Knoxville National Cemetery. Visitors should enter through the main entrance off of Broadway.

Many famous Knoxville residents are interred at the cemetery. Some of these include:

• Lizzie Crozier French (1851-1926) Suffragette and advocate for women’s rights.
• Lawrence Davis Tyson (1861-1929) United States Brigadier General and senator
• William Gannaway Brownlow (1805-1877) Governor of Tennessee, senator and author

Find out more about these and many other famous Knoxvillians. Tours are by carriage ride. Refreshments are available. This is a family friendly outing like none other in Knoxville.

The Old Gray Cemetery Lantern and Carriage Tour is held rain or shine.
